Historical and Cultural Background of Dzukou Valley

The name “Dzukou” is believed to originate from the Angami and Mao dialects, meaning “cold water,” referring to the chilling streams that flow through the valley.

Historically, the Naga forefathers discovered this valley while scouting for land to cultivate. Despite its beauty, they found the land unsuitable for agriculture, dubbing it “dull and soulless” or Dzükou in their local dialect.

Over time, what was once considered barren has transformed into one of the greatest tourist attractions in the states of Nagaland and Manipur

The local tribes, particularly the Angami Nagas, have a rich cultural heritage intertwined with the valley. Their traditional practices, festivals, and folklore are deeply connected to the natural environment. Visiting Dzukou Valley not only offers a chance to witness nature’s splendour but also to experience the vibrant culture of the Naga people.

 Getting There

 From Nagaland :

  1.  Viswema Route: The most common and accessible route. You can drive up to the last motorable point and then embark on a well-marked trek. The journey begins with a motorable road from Kohima, the capital of Nagaland, to Viswema village. From there, a steep but scenic trek leads you to the valley.
  1. Jakhama Route: A newer and shorter route but involves more walking compared to the Viswema route. For me, It’s the hardest one. This path is ideal for those looking for a more direct yet challenging trek. It takes quite a bit of strength and energy.

 From Manipur :

  1. Mount Tempu Route: A six-hour trek starting from the Senapati district. This route is less trodden and offers a different perspective of the valley. Starting from Mount Tempu, the trek is rigorous and recommended for experienced trekkers.

 Personal Experiences

Dzukou valley trekking
InuEtc in Dzukou valley

I went to Dzukou Valley in 2022, and it was my first solo trip and the best experience ever.

I have travelled to a lot of places, but among all the places I have seen, Dzukou Valley in Nagaland stands out as the best.

There are two main routes to the Dzukou Valley trek: one from Viswema Village and another from Zakhama Village. The Zakhama route is the hardest one. I took the Viswema Village route.

During the trek, we climbed hills, trekked on narrow roads full of rocks, and enjoyed amazing views for over five hours.

When I finally reached the base camp, I was so tired but couldn’t resist trekking into its breathtaking beauty.

I had lunch on a big rock at the top of Dzukou Valley while enjoying the beautiful views of the valley and the river below.

For the night, we relied on our sleeping bags and tents. Experience-wise, it was great.

I recommend the Viswema Village route and taking a guide with you.

     –  Special thanks to my brother InuEtc for sharing his personal experiences from his two visits to Dzukou Valley, which greatly enriched this blog. Your insights and stories have provided valuable guidance and inspiration for our readers.
